Region VI ActivitiesOctober 13, 2009: Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars ProgramFrom the American Association of Medical Colleges: I call your attention to an exciting clinical research training experience for doctoral-level U.S. students in the health professions, the Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program. The FICRS program offers a one-year clinical research training experience to advanced standing students in U.S. schools of medicine, public health, osteopathy, dentistry, nursing, veterinary medicine, optometry, nutrition and pharmacy. This is an opportunity for highly motivated individuals to experience mentored research training at top-ranked NIH-funded research centers in developing countries throughout Africa, Asia, South America, and the Caribbean. FICRS is sponsored by the NIH's Fogarty International Center (FIC) in partnership with 15 NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices. FICRS is administered by the FICRS-F Support Center at Vanderbilt University, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the Association of Schools of Public Health. The deadline to apply for the program is December 3, 2009. To learn more and to obtain an application, please visit www.aamc.org/overseasfellowship, or contact fic-fellowship@aamc.org with questions. October 12, 2009: Region VI Medical and Premedical Conference & Fall Regional MeetingThe Region VI Annual Conference 2009 will take place Saturday, December 5, 2009 at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. The Fall Regional Meeting will follow that evening from 7:30-9 pm. The conference theme for this year is "Healthcare Reform and the Future of the American Patient and Physician". In the current climate of heated discussion over healthcare reform, our organization is taking a harder look at how we as students can have an active role in the debate. Underserved populations will be impacted the most by current policy proposals, and it is critical that future physicians understand the complexity of the challenges that lie ahead. Our conference this year will include not only medical workshops, but a larger premedical student component than in prior years. In addition, a large exhibition hall is planned to highlight residency and medical school programs from around the country. Registration materials are available in the Regional Conference section.
