International Missions
The ethnic minority in the U.S. is faced with significant challenges in obtaining access to healthcare and continues to suffer disproportionately from a variety of diseases. This element of healthcare is seen in healthcare systems and cultures around the world.
SNMA has taken the challenge of serving the health needs abroad through International Medical Missions. Through medical missions, future minority physicians are exposed to the international gravity of these disparities. The aim is to emphasize the necessity of approaching health issues in a cultural context and to allow the participants to appreciate the essential elements of a successful health intervention.
While most Americans are blessed with access to basic health services of one form or another, in many countries, even basic health service needs are poorly met. The result - shortened life spans, rising infant mortality, and suffering at the hands of preventable diseases like AIDS, tuberculosis, syphilis, and a host of parasitic infections.
The International Affairs Committee is committed to educating members about health disparities around the world. Additionally, the Committee is dedicated to providing members with resources and information they need to engage in clinical experiences abroad.
Summer 2009 Mission Trips: Gambia, Senegal and the Dominican Republic
Apply to participate in these missions by March 6, 2009!
(Past SNMA mission groups have visited Jamaica, Ghana, Kenya, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. Next summer, at least two medical mission groups are expected to travel to Africa.)
The objectives of the International Affairs Committee are:
- to increase awareness of international health concerns.
- to provide an avenue for students to experience medical mission work.
- to establish a precedent that will encourage future physicians to actively utilize their expertise beyond the scope of the "traditional" U.S. health care milieu.
