Community Service Programs and Protocols
Sexual Health Awareness
The Sexual Health Awareness protocol is designed to educate teenagers about their bodies and about the positive use and expression of sexuality. It is intended to increase self-esteem, improve relationships, and decrease the incidence of teen pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
Violence Prevention
The Violence Prevention Protocol helps adolescents acknowledge anger as a natural emotion and shows them alternative non-violent ways of expressing themselves. Students are also taught how to resolve conflicts in a constructive non-violent manner.
Tissue and Organ Donation Education and Recruitment Program (TODER)
TODER educates the minority community about organ donation and encourages people to enroll in organ and tissue donation programs.
Smoking Prevention/Cessation
The Smoking Prevention / Cessation protocol provides a mechanism for SNMA members to promote healthy lifestyles that include the avoidance of tobacco products among youth.
Mental Health: Treatment, Awareness and Prevention
The Mental Health Protocol seeks to correct the inequalities in diagnosis, treatment and education of mental illnesses in the minority community. SNMA members seek to be at the forefront of the drive to minimize stigma surrounding mental illness.
Healthy People 2010 Health Fairs
Consistent with the U.S. Surgeon General's call to action for the 21st century, and in collaboration with other community organizations, SNMA conducts "health fairs" each year in locations throughout the nation. Targeted to underserved communities and those with limited access to health care, members educate scores of individuals about the importance of healthy living and provide accommodations for screening of common health conditions, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
Health and Wellness Program
Obesity Prevention involves disseminating information regarding healthy eating and physical activity to the community, as well as encouraging healthy lifestyle modification and weight loss for adults where appropriate.
SNMA Community Service Grant
The purpose of the SNMA Community Service Grant program is to provide financial assistance to SNMA local chapters in their service efforts. These efforts should comply with the mission of the SNMA and ideally will be related to national protocols. SNMA cannot fund speaker honoraria, food or travel. Chapters receiving grants will be required to submit a completed evaluation form and document the project within the Chapter Report Form upon completion. Failure to complete either form may jeopardize a chapter's ability to receive funds in the future. Projects may be chosen for presentation at the Annual National Medical Education Conference.
How Can My Chapter Participate?
SNMA chapters are encouraged to use these protocols on their campuses!
For more information and instructions on how your chapter can participate in SNMA protocols, please email communityservice@snma.org or your regional director (see BOD directory). A Community Service Protocol Training Handbook is available.
Deadlines / Reporting
Each quarter, SNMA chapters are required to submit Chapter Report Forms detailing activities. This helps us seek grants to help the regions and chapters continue service, as well as keeps us abreast of SNMA activities nationwide.
See the SNMA Event Calendar for deadlines.
Planning an event on campus? Email marketing@snma.org with a list of your chapter's activities for the SNMA event calendar.
