Dear Supporters and Potential Sponsors,
You
are receiving this e-newsletter because you have sponsored SNMA in the past,
either by exhibiting at our National or Regional Conferences or by providing
fiscal or in-kind support to our organization.
Please take a moment to catch up with the SNMA as we enter into another exciting
membership year. Glance over what we have been up to this fall. Read the quick
recaps of our 2007 Annual Medical Education Conference, held last April in San
Francisco, and the September National Leadership Institute and Board of
Directors meeting, held at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md.
Take this opportunity to reacquaint yourself with the SNMA as you consider
continuing to support us with our mission and in our quest for diversity in
medicine!
The Business of SNMA
Each quarter the SNMA Board of Directors meets at a different institution with a SNMA chapter. This September, the National Leadership Institute and Board of Directors meeting were held at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md.
While the Board of Directors met to discuss the business of the organization, pre-medical students attended a separate track of leadership-focused workshops. Medical students who are not on the National board, but are interested in becoming a national leader attended a separate set of workshops geared to groom them for future leadership positions, both within the SNMA and for other aspects of their lives.

Meharry Medical College Presidential Inauguration

Dr. Davenport represented the SNMA as a delegate at the inauguration of Dr. Wayne Riley. Riley was installed as the 10th President of Meharry Medical College on Friday, October 19, 2007.
Davenport presented Riley with a plaque commemorating Riley's appearance in the Journal of the Student National Medical Association's War and Health Issue. Riley was profiled as an "I am SNMA" distinguished alumni member.
The Student National Medical Association was co-established in 1964 by Meharry Medical College and Howard University College of Medicine.
A Look Back - the 2007 AMEC
The 42nd Annual Medical Education Conference, April 4-8, 2007 in San Francisco, was a tremendous success as nearly 1,300 SNMA members from all over the United States and other countries were officially registered for the event. This number of attendees was the highest of any SNMA meeting on the West Coast to date. Please watch this page for the dates and registration information for next year's AMEC in the Big Apple, March 19-23, 2008!
The SNMA thanks this year's AMEC participants, exhibitors, speakers and special guests for helping make the 42nd AMEC, "Achieving Wellness: Building Bridges to the Future" such a success. For those who did not participate this year, be sure to sign up to participate in or exhibit at next year's conference. The AMEC attracts students from all levels of medical education and is consistently the largest gathering of underrepresented minority medical students at any time in any place in the country.
Visit the 2007 AMEC page for a listing of sponsors and exhibitors and a link to a slideshow of photos from the conference!
SNMA Summer 2007 Mission to the Dominican Republic
SNMA members traveled to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic June 24 - July 8 of this year. Their mission focused primarily on developing Spanish language skills with an emphasis on medical terminology. This mission also included a clinical component that made it possible for students to visit governmental hospitals, community clinics and remote rural areas inhabited by citizens in the lower socioeconomic stratum and Haitian immigrants.
Stay tuned to www.snma.org and the JSNMA for photos and student narratives of their experiences in the Dominican Republic. Read about how you can sponsor an SNMA International Mission in the contribution options section of our website, and please contact me with any questions!
Thank you for taking the time to stay current with the SNMA! Continue to stay abreast of all that we are doing lately by visiting
www.snma.org on a regular basis. Feel free to call or email me with any sponsorship, exhibitor or advertising questions you might have.
Sincerely,
Melanie Sollid
