The 50 Years Forward Campaign: "A Celebration of Service And Advocacy"

The objective of this campaign is to enhance the outreach and effect of the SNMA programs and protocols through Community Engagement and Community Empowerment.

Goals:
  • To engage in a community service project that will address the health disparities issues.
  • To build on the advocacy efforts and capacity of the SNMA.
  • To continue to support medical and pre-medical students with relevant academic opportunities.

Action Plans:
  • "The Weight of the Nation" Initiative: The key to solving longstanding healthcare disparities existing in our minority communities will consist of a multi-angled approach. Understanding this, the SNMA will engage in a coordinated service efforts aimed to help educate our community and provide them with the tools to improve the health of their communities. We will focus our efforts on developing lasting relationships with our communities and providing a health message aimed at decreasing these disparities. Such community partnerships will improve the health professional image while providing learning opportunities for our members. Programming includes (1) Obesity Awareness and Prevention Program, and (2) Community Health Advocacy Training Pilot Program.
  • Advocacy Education and Initiatives: Recent efforts have been undertaken to strengthen our political voice through increased political activity and membership education. We will continue these efforts in the upcoming administration by giving our members the background and experience with policy and legislation. We will furthermore strengthen our collective voice by partnering with The Alliance for further effective advocacy efforts. Programming includes SNMA Health Policy and Legislative Awareness Network (P. L. A. N.).

The SNMANation Movement: "Building Tomorrow's Physician"

The objectives include:
  • continuing to support medical and pre-medical students with relevant academic opportunities via "The Campaign for Academic Excellence" initiative.
  • developing future physicians with the skills and abilities necessary to practice clinically excellent, culturally competent, and socially conscious medicine via "The Comprehensive Physician" initiative.

Action Plan:
  • Campaign for Academic Excellence: Our mission and commitment to support our members academically has not faltered. To that end, this administration will continue to investigate new benefits and opportunities to assist our member's journey through medicine. The Academic Campaign for Excellence will ensure the successful matriculation of future minority physicians. Programming includes (1) Web-based Mentoring Project, (2) ACE-IT Protocol, and (3) Academic Needs Assessment, and (4) increased academic benefits and opportunities for SNMA members.
  • The Comprehensive Physician: We are aware that it will take more than academic excellence to make a truly successful physician. In our ever-changing world, it is more apparent than ever, the need to have physicians with the understanding and ability to relate to all patients, regardless of background. This type of understanding comes from exposure and opportunities to engage different cultures. Within this component, the SNMA will strongly embrace the multiple cultures that encompass its members while increasing our cultural understanding. Programming includes the SNMA Health Disparities Research Symposium, Multi-Disiciplinary Health Leaders Summit, a collaboration with the Center for Disaster and Humanitarian Assistance Medicine, and the SNMA Campaign for Diversity and Understanding.
