Region IX Recognition

AMEC 2016 Region IX Dr. Wilbert C. Johnson Research Forum: Best Poster presentation award in the Pre-medical category: Joesph Haynes CUNY Queens College

Community Service Chapter of the Year
Our Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) SNMA Chapter was founded in 2012 by underrepresented minorities of our Charter Class. This year we focused on building a relationship with Lifting Up Camden's Youth (L.U.C.Y.) Outreach Program through preparing didactic sessions with the youth on healthy relationships and positive body image. This partnership with L.U.C.Y. has even extended to involve the Diversity Council at CMSRU. Other community service projects SNMA presented to the region include organizing a "Culture & You" session at our National MLK Day of Service, Project Brown Paper bag with The American Red Cross at CMSRU, and Secret Santa where they donated hats, scarves, gloves, and socks to Sumner Elementary School in Camden NJ. This year at AMEC we were awarded Community Service Chapter of the Year.

SNMA Chapter of the Year 2016: Rowan SOM
2015-2016 SNMA Executive Board
"The Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (Rowan SOM) SNMA chapter strives to uphold the mission of the national SNMA to the fullest. Our focus has always been on diminishing healthcare disparities, increasing cultural competency and social awareness, in addition to changing the medical student perspective on health through education. This year we were fortunate to have put on numerous programmatic events ranging from panels (faces of medicine panel, financial literacy panel, community grand rounds), partnering with local organizations (American Red Cross for our September blood drive, the National Alliance on Mental Illness for our January mental health presentation geared towards destigmatizing the negative connotation associated with mental health), volunteering at and coordinating community health fairs, increasing cultural diversity on campus (Journey through African Diaspora presentation, Black History Month Dinner Celebration), taking a stand on social issues (#ActionsSpeakLouder and White Coats for Black Lives campaign) and many more measures that serve to demonstrate our passion to the SNMA mission. We were extremely proud to be awarded the Regional IX Chapter of the Year at this year's AMEC and we will continue to strive for excellence in the years to come."

MAPS Chapter of the Year 2016: Hofstra University
The Hofstra Minority Association of PreHealth Students Chapter was established in September of 2014. Since then, we have grown to include more than 70 registered members on our campus. We are excited to celebrate our second year as the Region IX Maps Chapter of the Year. We were extremely honored to serve our region last November as a co-host with the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine SNMA Chapter for RMEC 2015. We are pictured to the left with our RMEC keynote speaker, Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Adu-Sarkodie, one of our guest speakers. As a chapter, we have worked with our SNMA sister chapter to begin a mentoring program between the undergraduate students and medical students on our campus. We have also participated in many activities such as our regional breast cancer walk, National Public Health Week and Midnight Run. We are excited to plan bigger and better events for our students in the near future.
