Physician-Researcher Initiative
Research Opportunities
Below are several research opportunities available for medical and pre-medical students. In addition to these, we are also working to establish research experiences exclusively for SNMA members. Please let us know of any research opportunities that you feel should be included. All comments can be sent to Tamia Harris at pri@snma.org.

Career Development
FREIDA Online is a database with over 8,200 graduate medical education programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, as well as over 200 combined specialty programs.
Based on presentations and discussions from a course developed by HHMI and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, this book is a collection of practical advice, experiences, and opinions from seasoned biomedical investigators and other professionals. It includes information on how to select a mentor, time management, data management and laboratory notebooks, getting funded and getting published.
This website is a companion to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's DVD, Ethics in Biomedical Research. The intent of this site is to help advance deeper exploration into many of the difficult ethical issues confronting modern day researchers. The content of the DVD and the resources found on this site principally address four areas of bioethics—the history and definition of ethical behavior in biomedical research; experimental use of animals, including primates; genetic alteration and stem cell research; and the challenges of maintaining scientific integrity.
Applying for Research Funding
Below are various websites regarding grants provided by a variety of organizations, including NIH and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Video: How to Give an Effective Presentation (available to members in MedConnect)
Speaker: Scott L. Friedman, M.D.
The Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship (CRF) program, established in 2000, is designed to encourage medical students to pursue careers in clinical research by giving exceptional students the opportunity to take a year to experience clinical research first hand. It is offered at 10 sites, including Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The Mount Sinai School of Medicine DDCRF under the auspice of Dr. Karen Zier graciously taped the following lecture and provided it to the SNMA.
Mentoring via Med-Connect
The SNMA is developing an online forum for SNMA members to interact with one another as well as professionals in the field of medicine, including physician-researchers. SNMA members will be able to search the database for professionals with similar interests and initiate contact. The physician-researchers will provide advice and mentor students. The student portion of the forum is now available. Physicians and physician-researchers are being asked to join the forums as well. Please check back for updates.
43nd Annual Medical Education Conference (AMEC) Schedule
Below is the PRI schedule from last year's Annual Medical Education Conference in San Francisco. The 2008 schedule is coming soon. The AMEC has emerged as a cornerstone activity for the SNMA, where students and professionals gather for a wide range of educational and networking activities. This year we anticipate a series of seminars regarding pursuing a career as a physician-researcher. We hope to videotape the lectures at the conference and have them available on this webpage. If you have any suggestions, including potential speakers, please contact Tamia Harris at pri@snma.org.
